The Jazz Museum celebrates jazz and Kansas City’s pivotal role in its evolution. The orientation theater experience, Jazz Is… , explores the music from the intimate perspectives of four great musicians-Max Roach, Shirley Horn, Jay McShann, and David Baker. Together, they provide a unique look at jazz from the inside out-from within the music-making experience-and from the perspective of Kansas City, the stage for an explosive moment in time within the ongoing story of jazz. Interactive listening stations, a video jukebox, and a rich spectrum of exhibits allow visitors to explore the many streams of music and culture which have shaped jazz over the years and resulted in the music we experience today.
Jazz Is… was one of 160 films selected from over 3,000 entries for screening at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival in 1999.
